A study released by the Media Law Resource Center
has analyzed complaints filed against the media. The
results provide a unique snapshot of the type of claims being brought against the
media.
Who is sued? Although not many are immune,
the following see the most:
- Print Publishers: newspapers
and reporters accounted for 53.7% of the complaints
- Television and Radio Broadcaster:
TV stations, production companies and programming services
collected
43.1% of the complaints.
Why are they sued? The most frequent activity leading to
lawsuits was general reporting (45.8%),
investigative reporting (8.8%) and advertising
/ promotion (8.1%). Libel was by far the most
frequent claim, with invasion of privacy, false light,
contractual issues and emotional distress claims brought
against defendants.
